Getting Started with FPV Drones: From Simulator to Sky
FPV (First Person View) drone flying is an exhilarating hobby that gives you the chance to experience flight. If you're eager to join the FPV community, follow these steps to get started on your journey.
Step 1: Start with a SimulatorÂ
Before investing in expensive hardware, it's crucial to familiarize yourself with FPV basic using a simulator. This approach is cost-effective and allows you to practice without risking real equipment.Â
Choosing a Simulator:
- Racing simulator - Velocidrone has the most realistic physics, perfect for building muscle memory. Compete as you learn online via weekly races or community made tracks.
- Freestyle simulator - Liftoff can be purchased directly from STEAM and has some of the best in-game maps/features. Online match making is also available to fly with your friends virtually.
- DRL simulator - Winning on the DRL Sim can land you a ticket onto the Drone Racing League on TV. Simulates flying the larger drones from the TV on identical virtual maps.
Benefits of Simulator Training:
- Cost-effective learning
- Risk-free environment for crashes
- Familiarization with controls
- Opportunity to assess your interest in the hobby
Step 2: Get the Right Controller
To make the most of your simulator training, invest in a quality radio controller. Ensure your controller is compatible with FPV simulators and has a USD HIB/joystick support for plug-and-play functionality. There is a good selection of remotes to choose from so you can find one at your price point, here are a few good options:
- Budget remote - Dip your toes into FPV for only $64.99 with the Radiomaster Pocket. The smallest radio on the market, a great way to start or travel lightly.Â
- Portable and powerful - the Radiomaster Boxer is serious enough to travel or to compete with. With available option to upgrade to CNC AG01 gimbals to get more precise control this is a great remote option.Â
- Forever remote - Radiomaster TX16S with upgraded CNC Hall sensor gimbals is the most commonly used among serious freestylers, racers, and professionals.Â
Step 3: Dedicate Time to Practice
The most important thing when started out in FPV is to get in lots of stick time. Spend at least 10 hours in the simulator to develop your skills. Focus on mastering the basic controls and gradually progress to more advanced maneuvers. Practicing virtually will help you build muscle memory and prepare you for real-world flying.
Step 4: Choose Your First FPV Drone
After gaining confidence in the simulator, it's time to choose your first real FPV drone. For your first drone prioritize durability over performance. You will experience several crashes as you get started and it hurts more when they happen on a more expensive drone. There are a few different options to consider when selecting your first drone:
- Build your own - this provides a deeper understanding of the components and allows for customization, but requires precise soldering skills.
- Buy a pre-built drone - a more convenient option for beginners and can always be customized later. We have several pre-tuned Five33 drones available to choose from.
- Beginner drone kit - there are several starter kits available on the market that include everything you need to get started and often available in a more economical bundle. Â
Step 7: Join the FPV Community
Connect with experienced pilots through online forums, local clubs, or social media groups. These communities can provide valuable advice, support, and inspiration as you progress in your FPV journey.
